What is it?  The Muldrew Lakes Cottagers’ Association is excited to announce that we are launching a Photo Contest this year.  We are so fortunate to be surrounded by the beauty of our lakes and hope that you will consider entering your photos. Here are the details.

Who can enter?  All members of the MLCA can enter photos.

What type of photos are eligible?  The subject of all photos must have something to do with Muldrew Lakes.  There will be 5 categories – you decide which best fits the photos you submit:

    Landscape

    Wildlife

    Life at the Lake

    Winter 2024-25

    Kids as photographers (under 16)

As this is our first photo contest, you may enter any of your favourite photos taken within the last three years.

How many photos can one individual enter?  Up to three photos per category.

When is the contest?  Photo entry will run from July1 to Aug 31, 2025.

How do I submit my photos?  Digital photos can be entered by sending them to events@muldrewlakes.ca.

What information will you need to accompany the submitted photos?  The category you feel best fits each submitted photo, Your name, and Your MLCA cottage number and local civic address

Judging: Everyone in the community will have an opportunity to vote on all submitted photos. The voting will take place using the Muldrew Lake Facebook platform.  Each week between Labour Day and Thanksgiving, photos for one of the five categories will be presented for community voting. There will be more details about this as we get closer to the judging timeframe.

Prizes: A grand prize will be awarded to the top photo in each of the five categories. In addition, the next four photos will also be recognized and celebrated.  Winners will be announced on Thanksgiving weekend.

Happy picture taking and have a great Muldrew season!!

    The Hoicka Family

The Hoicka family has enjoyed Muldrew Lakes since the 1960s. In the ‘90s they built our current cottage for our then young family. Soon after, Kathleen and John began giving services at Memorial Pines, often with guidance and support from the late Reverend Don Gillies. So that is over 30 years! Don also married two of our daughters and baptised two grandchildren.

    • 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
    • Thornhill Cottage - 239 Middle Muldrew Lake

Do you enjoy being outdoors, looking at bugs, and helping with the protection of your lake? Have you ever wondered what critters hide in the bottom of your lake and why they are there? Those are what are known as Benthic Macroinvertebrates (or benthos), and they are actually fantastic indicators of water quality!

These critters live in the bottom muck of your lake and include insect larvae, beetles, snails, clams, and worms. Some of them actually only spend part of their life underwater until they grow wings and fly off to spend the rest of their lives out of water.

These critters can tell you how clean your water is because some are very sensitive to chemicals and other bad things in your water, while other species don’t mind. Too many, or not enough, of a certain species can indicate that something is wrong with your lake.

To help you monitor the health of your lake, a Biomonitoring Technician will help you take samples which are then sorted and identified with the help of dedicated volunteers - YOU! All ages are welcome and we encourage you to join us so that we can all help protect our water. This is a fun activity and you also get to learn more about your lake. The whole process usually takes 2 hours.

Middle Muldrew Lake on Monday, July 28 at 10:00 am at the Thornhill Cottage, 239 Middle Muldrew Lake. If you would like to participate, please contact Nancy Thornhill at nwthornhill@yahoo.com

If you have any questions, or would like to know more about the program and what you can do to protect your watershed, please contact Jess, the Biomonitoring Technician, at biotech@muskoka.on.ca

    High School Hours Granted !

We look forward to seeing you out there !
